Do you remember when Smokey got Craig high? Craig then hits Smokey with “you said this was indo…smell like outdoe”. I laughed at the comment but at that age did not even know why that was funny. There is a difference in cannabis grown indoor weed vs outdoor weed. So why is this important? Because Select Co-op, Takoma Care and Wellness, Gifted legacy, and DC Cooperative (my favorite DC delivery dispensaries) have the finest strains around all indoor grown.

Of course, growing outside is ideal. Naturally, there is abundant sunlight outside. Plants growing outside have the rain and natural cycles to water them and bees to pollinate. Isn’t that the ideal growing environment? WRONG, in my Charlie Murphy voice, RIP. This makes me think of an Aloe plant I killed a few years ago. I watered it every day and drowned it. For literal weeds like dandelion flowers outside is ideal. However, quality cannabis strains are created from careful monitoring of light, water, and supplementation. Let’s go further and look at ways to tell the difference between indoor weed vs outdoor weed that’s grown…
What is the difference between Indoor Weed vs Outdoor Weed?
First off there is the size. Outdoor grown weed will typically have larger and chunkier buds. It is easy to tell by looking at the stems if buds were grown outdoors. Weed grown outdoors has stems that will almost grow into branches, so they are significantly thicker. Indoor buds will typically be smaller and denser. You may have had the experience of breaking down these concentrated buds for potent aromas to be detected.
Indoor grown weed will have more defined, dense, and curated trichomes. Think of trichomes when it comes to indoor weed vs outdoor weed as an art to produce and cultivate on a marijuana bud. The grower must monitor proximity to the light source (intensity of light), hydration, and supplementation. A well-crafted indoor grown bud will have trichomes blinging like crystals.
What happens to people when they stay out in the summer sun? We get darker. What do you think happens to cannabis? The same thing. Another difference between Indoor Weed vs Outdoor weed grown weed tends to be darker in pigmentation. Indoor grown buds will produce the visually aesthetic lime greens, striking purples, shimmering ambers, etc. Outdoor buds will look dark green, brown, or almost blackish purple.

What happens when you mix indoor weed with outdoor weed?
Then there is the combination of both worlds. To quote weedmaps, “(greenhouse growing) can be categorized as indoor cultivation using the power of the sun. It is the perfect marriage of indoor and outdoor because you have the environmental control of indoor but the incredible power of the sun. The result is typically buds that have the bag appeal of indoor with the elevated terpene and cannabinoid profiles of outdoor.
So, is there a difference between the quality of indoor weed vs outdoor weed? To quote weedmaps again, “Between indoor weed vs outdoor weed cultivation, the distinguishing factor in quality is the control of its environment. Factors such as temperature, light, water, humidity, carbon dioxide (CO2) exposure and care are going to be easier to control during indoor cultivation”. There are some strains though that grow better in outdoor environments. Essentially, we are talking about the growers themselves.
Outdoor growers may have acres of crop and may not have the time or means to ensure the quality of each plant. Indoor growers are growing less and have the time and ability to control every aspect of production. Thankfully, the indoor growers providing supplies to Select Co-op, DC Cooperative, Gifted Legacy, and Takoma Care and Wellness definitely know what they are doing!
