Missouri Marijuana Initiatives Old and New
With 2022 comes many new opportunities. One of those opportunities is the initiative being launched for Missouri Marijuana Legalization. With Amendment 2 passing for Missouri recreational cannabis, the push for recreational actually began shortly after. However, with Covid and the whole crazy train we call the last few years, the initiative got delayed.
Originally seeking to be on the November ballot for 2020, New Approach PAC collected around 80,000 of the 160,199 signatures needed to be put on the ballot for that year. This initiative was to allow people 21 and over to possess cannabis legally in Missouri, along with the ability to cultivate three plants for personal use. That plant number being quite lower than the 6 plants in each stage that medical patients are allowed. Along with the ability to possess, we would also have the benefit of the 15% sales tax on all marijuana sales would have brought to our states revenue. New Approach decided this was better sought out in a different election though, and this results in the push for recreational marijuana in 2022! Until then, you will need to get your Missouri Medical Marijuana Card.
Missouri Recreational Cannabis Comeback
2022 is a whole new year and the future is looking quite well! Covid mandates being released and so much more shows that this year will be a winner in all forms! Legal Missouri 2022 is bringing a new initiative to the table with even better revisions:
- Adult use over 21 legalized (purchase, possess and cultivate)
- Nonviolent marijuana offenses expunged
- Up to 3% local tax revenue (estimated to be min of 13-40 million annually for local governments. On Average)
- Business Licenses: This is a big one for many, yes they are pushing to get more licenses approved via a Lottery type system.
- Extend medical licenses from 1 to 3 years before renewal and reduce cultivation fees by half.
- Let the Community Decide – Allow communities to vote on opting out of adult-use retail marijuana sales.
Cannabis Sales Revenue
Missouri medical marijuana has been legalized for a few years now, with some great revenue coming in on it’s own. However, what could we expect from Missouri marijuana legalization on the recreational level? Just to give you an idea, Colorado reported that local dispensaries sold more than $2 billion dollars worth of cannabis. I would imagine would bring in something close to that once things are up and going.
