420 gets all the glory, but what does it mean to be 710 friendly? Ever year, July 10th, is recognized as National Dab Day. Weed lovers everywhere are encouraged to consume cannabis concentrates, especially dabs, to celebrate. While 420 has a long history of signaling that someone is open to all things cannabis, 710 is a bit more niche. 710 specifically refers to an affinity for concentrates and dabbing within the cannabis community. So it’s a community within a community, so to speak. Today, the three digit code is a popular way to represent use of dabs and concentrates like oils, shatters, distillates, live resins, and terpene extracts.
There are a couple of reasons that 710 was chosen as dab day. Firstly, cannabis concentrates are frequently referred to as oils in cannabis culture. Secondly, 710 is an anagram for the word “OIL”, which looks like the number 710 when turned upside down. Like 420, the day is not attributed to any particular person, but the rise of cannabis oil over the last decade has increased visibility of the holiday.
Being 710 friendly does come with perks. Concentrates are portable and smoke free, making them consumable in smoke free places, whereas their combustible cousins blunts, wraps, and pipes are not. Concentrates are just that: concentrated. This means that the high is stronger and hits faster, making it perfect for more experienced users. Concentrates can easily be vaporized, which is doable, but not easy for cannabis flower. While flower can be vaporized, doing so typically is typically costly and requires large table top devices, while concentrates are pocket sized and easy to use on the go.
710 isn’t yet as commonplace and popular as 420, but that’s because concentrates use is less common among cannabis lovers today. It is, however, a quickly growing segment of the cannabis market. The global concentrate market is about 20% of the cannabis market and has a CAGR of $14B by 2026. As cannabis lovers look for new ways to ingest and explore cannabis, you can expect the holiday to grow in recognition. Will it ever become as big as 420? Maybe not, but concentrate lovers like it that way. Either way, whenever there is an opportunity to diversify my cannabis consumption methods, sign me up.
