That is our country prepared to do to help a whole coast of people? It is interesting to me that while thousands of people have lost homes, livelihood, and family members the president of the United States has said little to nothing on the topic. Is is because California is a Democratic State?
Fires that have joined and synthesized together have been termed the August Complex. As of the evening of September 25th, 2020 blazes were nearing the communities of Post Mountain and Trinity Pines. These areas are about 200 miles NW of Sacramento, California as indicated by foxbusiness.com.
It is reported that these areas are large farming areas for cannabis growers. The August Complex blaze is threatening this growing enclave and authorities indicate residents are refusing to evacuate. Weather predictions indicate extremely dry and windy conditions may easily fan flames towards that area foxbusiness.com also reports.
I can only imagine the dilemma people are facing. Evacuate their homes and businesses leaving crops, future income, and their homes left to burn to nothing, or stay and risk being burned alive and die of smoke inhalation to save your family’s livelihood. These are not choices, but rather just a fucked up situation of reality!
Foxbusinessnews.com reports “Law enforcement officers went door to door warning of the encroaching fire danger, but could not force residents to evacuate, Trinity County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Nate Trujillo said. As many as 1,000 people remained in Post Mountain and Trinity Pines, authorities and local residents estimated Thursday. “Numerous studies in recent years have linked bigger U.S. wildfires to global warming from the burning of coal, oil and gas, especially because climate change has made California much drier” according to Foxbusinessnews.com. However, let’s look at it like this. Whether it is from the burning of fossil fuels or the Earth heating up naturally, what is not in dispute is the climate is changing. A drier, hotter, California means plants are more flammable.
The area currently being threatened by the fires is termed the “Emerald Triangle” according to Foxbusinessnews.com. Some estimate this is the largest cannabis producing region in the nation. Residents of the area estimate the community has up to 40 legal farms and possibly four times that number operating illegally. I understand growers’ trepidation to leave as harvest is days away and millions of dollars may be lost. According to foxbusinessnews.com, one estimate put the value of the area’s legal marijuana crop at about $20 million.
