When I was first exposed to the science of terpenes I was like damn. This is adding knowledge to my cannabis understanding of immense proportions. Then I began to study more. The science on terpenes is amazing. Yet most of the shit you read has nothing to do with science.
What are terpenes? Terpenes are elements of plant and herbal species that manifest fragrances and flavors. I am sure you are aware of hops and beer. The quality of the hops provides a higher quality, better tasting product and richer flavor. It is the terpenes responsible for this.
Terpenes can be extracted and added to concentrates to create extracts. Like at the health food store you see the lavender, eucalyptus, lemongrass, etc. oils. Terpenes have been used to create these products.
Looking at cannabis, terpenes are responsible for that dank, fruity, or diesel smell that your strain emits. However, recently sellers who will not be named here (no free advertisement) have terpene products on the market to offer an amount of CBD relief. Terpenes are being sold as THC contents as well. Well what produces CBD and THC in cannabis?
Trichomes are small glands that grow on the marijuana plant. Trichomes are the hairy-like things swirling around your bud. Often they are shining and bling blinging. When folks talk about the frosted crystal appearance, they are speaking of trichomes.
Trichomes produce terpenes, THC, and CBD. So when folks extract terpenes and to cure and make a product out of it… How is there any CBD or THC in it? If I am missing something please let me know. Other than a nice smelling cannabis oil what are folks getting buying cannabis terpenes? Ensure your terpene product indicates that CBD has been added and the company should provide info on their process. There are CBD products with terpenes added for smell and taste. Terpenes by themselves are just smell and taste.
